Mite (Acari)
Mite (Acari)
Mite is a small arthropod and is classified together with tick under acari. It is the most diverse of the arachnids and, while the tick is easily seen, the mite is hardly visible to the human eye, as it is usually smaller than 1 mm in size.
Its life cycle lasts about 15 days for the male and up to 70 days for the female. It does not withstand temperatures above 30 °C.
It is very harmful, as it is found almost everywhere. It feeds on organic matter particles from the human body (dandruff, dead cells, etc.)
The most common species is the house dust mite.
A very widespread and well-known disease caused by a specific mite is scabies, which is also contagious. The scabies mite nests in the skin of humans and animals and causes extensive damage if the necessary treatment is neglected. Larger mites can also bite the skin and cause rashes.
They usually accumulate in warm and humid places like bed mattresses, carpets, and bedding. They are considered to be one of the worst allergens, if inhaled by human.
Several of the mites cause allergic reactions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, and dermatitis.
